The storylines in episodes of Ally McBeal revolve around the
trials and tribulations of a female lawyer, Ally McBeal (Calista
Flockhart), working at a Boston law firm (Cage & Fish). She
went to law school at Harvard, where she was deeply in love with
a man called Billy (Gil Bellows). However, Billy left for
Michigan, where he met his future wife, Georgia (Courtney
Thorne-Smith).
After leaving her old job, she signed up for a Havard buddy,
Richard Fish (Greg Germann). Everything was going well, into
Ally was introduced to the other lawyers, one of whom was the
married Billy. From there onwards, Ally has always tried to
forget Billy, and find another love. Dating one guy after
another, there has always been something wrong with them, and so
she feels that she will be alone forever. However, she has her
room-mate, Renee Raddick (Lisa Nicole Carson) to support her
throughout.
Ally seems to settle down at Cage & Fish, and becomes
particularly good friends with John Cage (Peter MacNicol),
another weird member of the Cage & Fish team. The Biscuit,
as John Cage is known, doesn't have fantasies (à la Dancing
Baby) like Ally, but instead insists on using Smile Therapy as a
why to cheer himself up after being 'disparaged', and takes
moments when things get too tough.
The Cage & Fish team are also quite inventive, especially
Elaine Vassel (Jane Krakowski), Ally's secretary. She has come
up with the Husband CD (to simulate the sounds a husband would
make) and Ice Goggles (to get rid of eye-bags) among others. The
Biscuit also has a remote toilet flusher, because her insists on
having a 'fresh bowl'.
